The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of post-traumatic cognition on the psychological sequelae including posttraumatic stress symptom, depression and anxiety in women who suffered from sexual violence. For this purpose, demographic characteristics, sexual violence incident characteristics, and post-incident characteristics of 104 victims of sexual violence were surveyed and psychological symptoms were evaluated by self-report questionnaire. This study found that post-traumatic cognition was significantly correlated with PTSD symptoms, depression and anxiety as well as incident characteristics. In order to identify the independent effects of post-traumatic cognition on PTSD symptom, depression, and anxiety, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted. The negative cognitions about the self had significant effects on PTSD symptoms, depression, and anxiety, and negative cognitions about the world had significant effects on anxiety symptoms even when demographic variable and incident characteristics were controlled for in the analysis. This study suggested that treatment approach and case support should be provided considering post-traumatic cognitions in order to reduce the psychological distress of sexual violence victims. Limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
